When upgrading to Windows 10, some of you might have noticed a few things that were taken in the process. So here’s a quick run-down of the features that were taken away and what alternatives there are.
Windows Media Center: In 2005, Microsoft launched a separate version of Windows XP called Windows XP – Media Center Edition. Windows Media Center was a an application for people to not only play DVDs, but an interface for your music, pictures and any videos (or movies) you have stored on your computer. If you have a TV card in your computer then you could even watch TV stations!
However, Windows 10 does not come with a media center solution. If you want a good media center application then you might want to take a look at Kodi. Formerly known as XBMC this is a free, powerful media center a which has pretty much all of the functionality of Windows Media Center. In my testing I have found that Kodi is compatible with Windows 10.
With Kodi, not only can you view pictures, listen to music and watch videos stored on your computer, you can also view YouTube Videos, Twitch TV streams and catch your favourite podcasts. For those of you in the UK you can even set up Kodi to catch free-to-air/DVB/freeview channels as well (provided you have a TV license of course).
What about your DVDs? Well Microsoft has already promised that a dedicated DVD player is on the way. However, if playing DVDs is what you care about then I would highly recommend VLC Media Player. Not only is it able to play pretty much anything you throw at it but you can also play DVDs with it. VLC is also another free media player that is widely regarded as one of the best media players out there.
Another couple of things that went away with the release of Windows 10 are solitaire and Minesweeper. Yes, those two classic time waisting games have caused the loss of many hour and did not come with Windows 10. However, the good news is that Microsoft have released the Solitaire Collection and Minesweeper. Both of these are re-makes of the classic games and are available right now from the Windows 10 Store.
Last but not least, the OneDrive app that came as part of the Windows live essentials package has also been removed from Windows 10. However, there is a new version of the OneDrive desktop app which Microsoft is working on at the time of publishing.
