At their Galaxy Unpacked event on Thursday, Samsung unveiled a new smartphone called the Galaxy Note 9. This is going to be Samsung’s latest in their long line of Galaxy Note smartphones.
Jumping right in, We’ll kick off with the camera. The Note 9 has an intelligent camera. What does this mean? Well first of all, when taking photos of a landscape, it will automatically optimise the picture you are taking by tweaking the colours. It also has a feature that adjusts to low-light situations. We’ve all had that moment where we take a photo and we mess up the shot. Let’s say you take a photo of a friend and they blinked. With the camera on the Note 9, you will see a notification pop up. You will then be able to tap it and have it fix the photo so their eyes are opened.
The S Pen that comes with the Galaxy Note 9 is also getting a revamp as well. Connecting via Bluetooth LE, it has many uses. For example, if you are doing a presentation, you can use it to switch to the next slide. You can even use it to help you take selfies and even to pause the videos that you watch.
Of course, one of the other features is Samsung Dex. When you plug your phone into a standard PC monitor (via HDMI) you can have a desktop-like experience. Apps will open up in separate windows so you can do some photo editing, maybe work on a presentation or a write-up.
Let’s take a look at some of the specs of this phone:
- 6.4″ edge-to-edge display
- 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera
- 2.7GHz + 1.7GHz 8-core processor or 2.8GHz + 1.7GHz 8-core processor
- 802.11 b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi
- 6GB or 8GB of RAM
- Android Oreo (AKA Android 8)
You will get 128GB of storage or a massive 512GB of storage (4 times the storage of the base model). If you are still in need of more space, then you can add another 512GB with a Micro SD card.
Another thing that’s worth noting is that you will be able to plug in headphones using either the USB-C port at the bottom, or the standard 3.5mm headphone jack.
So when will you be able to get one of these? Well, you won’t have to wait too long for it! Samsung is going to release the Galaxy Note 9 on the 24th of August 2018. It will come in Midnight Black, Lavender Purple, Metallic Copper with the S Pen. If you get the Ocean Blue model, you will get a Yellow S Pen. At this time, no pricing information has been announced.
Overall, Samsung Dex has been around in some of the previous Samsung Galaxy smartphones. It’s a nice-to-have feature and I can see the benefits such as being able to do some work whilst on-the-go (like answering emails or working on a document on a second screen). With that said the whole idea of being able to plug your phone into a screen and bring up a desktop is good but quite a nice use-case and I don’t see a lot of people using it. Personally, I would rather get out a tablet or laptop and do my work.
I also think that it’s good to see that Samsung is still supporting the headphone jack. I have said this before and I will say this again, I would rather prefer plugging in my own headphones directly as opposed to carrying around a dongle/adapter (which I might end up losing anyway).
As for the camera system, I think that there are a lot of really good features. For me, the best part of the camera system is being able to fix a slightly out of focus photo after the fact. I also like that the phone can fix a photo of a person when they blinked, and make it look like they had their eyes open the whole time.
What are your thoughts on the Galaxy Note 9?
