Welcome to another edition of Adi’s Week in Tech News. If you are new, this is my roundup of the week’s technology news stories.
Of course, the big story of the week involves Apple and their latest operating System. Mac OS High Sierra had a huge security hole in it meaning that anyone with physical access to your computer could get access to anything on your computer. Of course, Apple were aware of the issue and a software update has been released. I would strongly recommend that you install the update immediately. You will also need to restart your computer after installing the update.
Here in the UK there’s been a data breach over at a supermarket called Morrisons. The details of nearly 100,000 members of staff were stolen. Some of the data includes addresses, names, salary and bank details. A high court ruling now means that those affected are now owed compensation from Morrisons as they have been found to be liable for the data breach.
Bitcoin is a digital currency that has really taken off. In the USA the internal revenue service (better known in the IRS) has asked Coinbase for customer data. The IRS has asked Coinbase to hand over the identities of users how have made at least one transaction of $20,000(a little more than £14,800) or more between 2012 and 2015. For a bit of context, Coinbase is an exchange where you can turn your bitcoin into actual money.
In a related bitcoin story, Bitcoin has passed a milestone in terms of its value. It reached a record high of $10,000(£7400). At the time of publishing this article, the 1 bitcoin is currently worth over $11,700(a little more than £8700).
Windows 10 is Microsoft’s current operating system for desktop PCs, smartphones and tablets. The fall(AKA autumn) creators update was recently released, but it turns out that there’s another feature in the works called Sets. This feature basically means that you will be able to have Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote (and other apps) all in the same window. The sets feature will only be available to a select group of users on the Windows 10 Insider programme as of right now.
Google has released a new app this week called Datally. This app will let you monitor how much data you are using up on your Android device. IT will allow you to monitor how data you are using via Wi-Fi and how much of your mobile data allowance you are using as well. Datally is available for Android smartphones/tablets right now and you can download it from the Google Play Store.
That’s going to do it for this roundup. What were your favourite news stories of the week? Let me know in the comments.
