At their event on Tuesday Apple unveiled a brand new iPhone called the iPhone X. This is the big one which marks 10 years of the iPhone. Of course one of the big differentiators between most of the iPhones is that the screen takes up pretty much the whole of the front. It’s a 5.8″ super retina display.
Another thing that you will notice is that there is no home button. Instead, if you want to get back to the home screen, you will swipe up from the bottom. Also, the power button is still there, however it will do more than just turn your phone on and off (or turn the screen off). It will also be used to access your wallet (where you have your credit cards, boarding passes and so on).
Switching to the cameras, you have two 12MP cameras on the back. One has a wide angle lens and one has a telephoto lens. You can record video in Ultra HD(4k) at up to 60 frames per second. Of course, you can record slow motion video in Full HD(1080p).
On the front, you have the all-new TrueDepth Camera. This is used mainly for FaceTime and a new unlock system called FaceID. You will basically be able to use FaceID for unlocking your phone (so it’s basically touchID but it uses your face). Not only that but let’s say you want to buy something from the iTunes store, the App Store or another store that uses Apple Pay(apple’s mobile payments system) you can basically pay for things using your face (instead of your finger print).
On the inside, you have a new CPU called the A11. It’s a bionic CPU which helps with the Face ID tech.
One of the interesting features coming to iPhone X is Animoji. You can basically have an animated character that will match your facial expressions when you record your Animoji message. The characters available include a fox, a unicorn and a panda. Now, you can get the answer to “What does the fox say?”
Apple are switching it up when it comes to charging the battery in the iPhone X. It will now do wireless charging. If you have a Qi wireless charging pad, just stick your phone onto that pad and then it will start charging.
The iPhone X is going to be available to order on the 23rd of October 2017. It will then officially release on the 3rd of November 2017. It will be available in Space Grey or Silver and will cost £999 for the 64GB version or £1149 for the 256GB version.
Apple is basically following a trend that’s already out there, I am of course talking about phones where the screen takes up the vast majority of the front of the phone (AKA a bezel-less screen). As such, there is nothing really new with this feature. With that being said the iPhone X gives you the option to buy an iPhone with (effectively) a bezel-less screen.
I will say that the Animoji is nice to have, I just don’t really see any use for it on a more personal level. I am sure that if you are buying an iPhone and want to mess around with a different way of sending messages over iMessage then some of you out there will have fun with this one.
Face ID is also a good idea. With that said, Microsoft already implemented this with Windows hello(being able to log into a computer using your face). As such this is something that’s not really new or innovative per se.
On a more personal note I prefer having a home button as opposed to swiping up from the bottom (which I use to bring up the control center where I can enable Wi-Fi on an iPad). I feel like this is one of those times where Apple has gotten rid of a home button for the sake of doing away with it. With that being said you can still buy another iPhone with a home button if you really want a home button.
On top of that it’s quite a pricey iPhone even for the “base model” at nearly £1000 for 64GB of storage. I would consider this to be the luxury edition of the iPhone in that if you want to go all out on an iPhone then this is the iPhone that Apple will want you to buy.
What do you think of the new iPhone X? Will you be buying one (or even waiting in line to buy one at an Apple Store)? Let me know in the comments!
