At their special event on Wednesday, Apple announced two new smartphones: The iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max.
Of course, we have to start off with the new screen. Since the iPhone 4, we’ve seen iPhones that have Apple’s retina display. The iPhone X was the first to have the Retina HD display. However, the iPhone XS comes with a Super Retina HD display measuring in at 5.8″. This is what Apple is billing as the sharpest display in an iPhone yet. The iPhone XS Max has a larger screen than the iPhone XS measuring in at 6.5″.
Let’s move onto the cameras. From the pictures above you will notice that there are two camera lenses (each of them is a 12MP camera). However, one of them is a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/1.8 and one of them is a telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.4.
On the front of the phone, you have Apple’s TrueDepth 7MP camera which has a f/2.2 aperture. It also supports a type of photography called Bokeh when you are in portrait mode as well as depth control. You can see the types of photos that it can capture right here.
Another interesting thing that Apple has added to the iPhone is the ability to use two SIM cards. Keep in mind that you will need Nano SIM
On the internals, we are looking at a new chip called the A12 Bionic. Apple are billing this as the most powerful CPU in a smartphone. It’s 15% faster than the A11 Bionic seen in the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X and has up to 50% less power usage than the A11 Bionic.
It’s also got Gigabit-class LTE, meaning if you are in a country that supports such speeds for mobile internet then you can take advantage of that.
It also supports the Qi wireless charging standard.
Of course, it supports Augmented Reality (the ability to super-impose virtual objects (like a bicycle or a frame onto) the real world.
The other technology that is in the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max is Face ID. This means that you can use your face to unlock your phone or to pay for things using Apple Pay.
On the software side, it will come with iOS 12 out of the box. This is Apple’s latest operating system for iPhones and iPads. By the way, I should mention that iOS 12 is coming out on the 17th of September. So, if you have an older iPhone that will run iOS 12, you will be able to get it then.
What about battery life on the iPhone XS? Let’s take a look (source: Apple):
The iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max will both be available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB models. They will come in Space Gray, Silver, and Gold colours.
The iPhone XS starts at £999 and the iPhone XS Max starts at £1099.
You will be able to pre-order The iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max from the 14th of September. The iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max will then release on the 21st of September. Here are the countries that will get it on these dates:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UAE, UK, US and US Virgin Islands.
On the 28th of September, here are the countries that will get the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max:
Andorra, Armenia, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, India, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Monaco, Oman, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia and South Africa
The interesting thing about these new iPhones is the whole thing of being able to put two SIM cards in there. Personally, I am really surprised that this was not added to the iPhone X (or any other iPhone for that matter). Why is this a big deal? Well, suppose you’re going abroad and want to buy a SIM card from another country, then you can keep the SIM card that you normally use whilst having the second SIM in your phone. You can even name your SIM cards in the settings. Indeed, there are other smartphones which support this dual-SIM capability. However, this is the first time we have seen an iPhone with two SIM card slots.
Augmented Reality is a technology that’s on the ascendancy and has really gathered momentum. One of the more interesting demos that caught my eye was an app called Homecourt to help basketball players improve their game. Suppose you were working on improving your accuracy when shooting at the basket. You can have someone point the camera towards you, and have this app tell you how many of your shots are actually going into the basket and what angle you are releasing the ball at. There is a new version of this app that takes advantage of the A12 Bionic chip that will be coming out later on in the Autumn.
For those of you that use their iPhone as their camera, having the ability to control the depth of field after you take a photo could prove to be a plus point.
