Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of Adi’s Pick of The Week of 2018. If you are new to this website, this is where I pick out one piece of software or a website that you need to check out.
Sony’s PlayStation 3 controller is one of the many choices out there when it comes to a controller for playing games on your PC. However, there are many ways to get it working on your PC.
The way this works is you have to install the SCP toolkit onto your computer. Once you do this you will then run the SCP Toolkit Driver installer.
Once you have put it on your PC, you can launch the SCP Toolkit Driver Installer. Make sure that all your PS3/PS4 controllers are plugged into your computer before running the SCP Toolkit driver installer. In any case, you can run the SCP Toolkit driver installer again if you wish to install more PlayStation 3 controllers at a later stage.
Select the controller (or controllers) you would like to install. Once you do that, click “Install” and the installation process for the required drivers will do its work. In short, the install process is fairly straightforward. After that, you can start using your controller with the games in your Steam library.
I have tried this with games, such as Cuphead, Dark Souls III, Rez Infinite and Dirt 3(A slightly older game). All of these games are able to see the PlayStation 3 controller and work really well with it. When it came to Dark Souls III, there was a slight delay with button presses registering in the game. I don’t know whether or not it could be the cable that I used or some input delay baked into the game itself or something else (if you know, leave a comment).
I can also confirm that it works with Windows 10 (as I have Windows 10 on my PC). According to their Github page, SCP Toolkit will also work with Windows 7 as well.
Overall, I will say that SCP Toolkit is hands down the best solution that I’ve found for using a PlayStation 3 controller on your PC. I would highly recommend that you check it out and give it a go for yourself.
Please note that you will need to make sure that the drivers for the Xbox 360 controller are installed (as this is what SCP Toolkit uses to work its magic). They can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.
You can download the latest release from their Github page (which is 18.104.22.16810 at the time of publishing).
Find the instructions on how to use the software right here.
Have you used SCP Toolkit before? What was your experience of using it like? Let me know in the comments.
