It was seven years ago today that someone uploaded the first video to YouTube. Since then, YouTube has gone through a lot of changes along the way. From the way the site looks and feels, to the amount of video content that one can upload at any given time. For me, I think that some of the changes to YouTube have been good.
Before, anyone could upload a video to YouTube, so as long as the length of the videos stayed under ten minutes. However, at the time of writing, you can now upload a video so as long as you kept the length to under 15 minutes. If you are a producer of a film or want to become a partner then you can upload a video which has a length of more than 15 minutes.
Another great thing(for those who have a good enough internet connection to handle it), is that you can watch some videos in full HD(1920×1080 or 1080p) or at least in 720p HD(1280×720).
Of course, software applications have also aided users in the uploading of video content to YouTube. On the desktop, there have been a lot of Applications like iMovie which allow you to edit and upload video content to YouTube in full HD if you choose to do that(and if your video is in full HD. On mobile devices, both Google and Apple have given users the ability to upload videos to YouTube right from their mobile device.
That being said, there have been a lot of changes which a lot of users have hated, over the years, YouTube’s layout has changed and many people have complained. However, people have grown to like these changes a lot of the time.
In the grand scheme of things, I think that the whole beauty of YouTube, is that I can use it as a “hosting ground” for my YouTube videos if I chose. This means that I can upload my videos to YouTube and them embed the video player for the said videos right onto this site. Best of all, they give you unlimited bandwidth for your videos and of course semi-unlimited. I say semi-unlimited, because you can upload as many videos as you want, but you can only upload videos whose length is no longer than 15 minutes for normal users of YouTube. That’s why I think that YouTube is a great tool for people who need a cheap way to host their video content online, even though it has it’s limits.
So what’s your take on this one? Let me know by posting your thoughts in the comments below.
