The Christmas holidays are here. I know that a lot of you out there might be leaving your shopping to the last minute. Don’t worry, we’ve all done it before. With that in mind I thought that I would share with you some gift ideas that will help this Christmas go with a bang!
Gift vouchers are a great way to give someone the freedom to buy what they want to. In 99% of cases you can also have the gift instantly emailed to your recipient. You can even make it so that the gift voucher is emailed on the morning of Christmas day itself.
Steam gift cards – I know that a lot of you out there might have a gamer that you are buying for. You have to be very careful when buying for them because they know what games they want. With a steam gift voucher you can give them the ability to fill their steam account with some money to buy the games that they want. You can buy a steam gift card from the link below:
Amazon gift card – Sometimes, you might want to get them something but you don’t know what to get them. That’s why I really like getting someone an Amazon gift card. The chances are, that the person you are getting it for has an Amazon account. They can then just log into their amazon account and redeem the code on the gift card and use that money to buy whatever they want to. You can buy an Amazon gift card from one of the following affiliate links below. Once you follow the link you can choose the amount for your gift card. Another killer part of this is that you can also email the gift card to your recipient and have it set to be delivered on the morning of Christmas day itself. You can get yours right now from the affiliate link below.
Apple iTunes Gift Cards – Someone you know might have a Mac, iPad or iPhone and they might be looking to add a few apps or games to their collection. When you go to their store or you buy from the website you simply choose the amount you want. If you are buying an electronic one you can even choose the style of gift card and write a little message as well. Once you have given the gift card they can then redeem the code on it and then they will be able to use it to buy the song, movie, TV show or app of their choice. Of course, the money from that gift card is usable in Apple’s iTunes music/movie/TV store, iBook store, Mac App store and of course the iOS App Store.
Tablet computers are a great way to get your emails, check in on Facebook, play some games and much more on the go. Most important of all they can make a killer gift as long as you spend above £100. This is because in my experience, the tablets that fall under that limit do not perform that well and the battery does not last a day.
iPad Mini 2- I know that a lot of people really want an iPad but might not be able to afford a full sized iPad. That’s why I recommend getting them an iPad Mini. You can do a lot of stuff on it such as reading your emails, browsing Adi’s Tech Site watching YouTube videos and so much more. You can get the iPad Mini for £219. For 16GB. I have used an iPad Mini and I will say that it’s amongst one of the best tablets that I have used in 2015. The screen is super clear, it’s responsive and I can get from 7AM in the morning to 11PM at night on a single charge from using it for writing documents, watching youtube videos and playing some games. If that’s not enough you also have lots of different apps. It really is the gift that keeps on giving.
Of course there’s the iPad Air starting from £319 for 16GB of storage. It’s definitely another killer gift if you have the money.
Apple has some good tablets With that being said there are some other tablets out there and here’s my pick of the Android tablets.
Asus Nexus 7 2013 – In 2013 Google teamed up with Asus to bring out the Nexus 7 with it’s 7″ screen. I have to say that it’s hands down one of the best Android tablets that I have ever used.
I have used one of these recently and I was impressd. I found it quite responsive in that I was able to play videos with close to no stuttering at all and games were smooth as well. In terms of battery life, I used it to watch videos on Youtube, send and receive a few emails and edit a few documents (and some games of course). At least in my testing I was able to get from 7AM to 11PM on a single day of charge. Most important of all it’s stock Android and that makes for a nice and clean user experience. Out of the box you get Android Jelly Bean but you can still get Android Marshmallow for it by way of a software update. Again with lots of apps to choose from in the Google Play Store this will be another gift that will prove very useful.
You can still get a nexus 7 for £125 if you want 16GB of storage (affiliate link). If you really need more storage then I would highly recommend getting the 32GB version for £189.99 from my affiliate link above.
Media Streamers allow you to watch the latest TV shows from BBC’s iPlayer, watch movies online from Netflix and much more. If you have an iPad or a Nexus 7 then you can even use one of these media streaming devices to take your video onto your TV. It can also be good to turn an older TV with just an HDMI connector at the back into a smart TV.
Apple TV – If you all you own is Apple computers, smartphone and tablets (or you know someone who does) then this might be the perfect gift. Apple are well known for having great menu systems on their devices. If you have an iPad or iPhone you can also take the video that you are watching and send it to the TV using AirPlay. If you’re playing a game on your iPhone or iPad you can then enable AirPlay Mirroring to take your game onto the big screen.
Apple’s latest model comes with voice command capability so you can say things like “search Netflix for Action movies”. You can of course download various apps including the BBC iPlayer as well as a bunch of different games. I know that this sounds weird but you can actually do your shopping on the new Apple TV.
This newer Apple TV costs £129 for 32GB of storage or you can go for the 64GB version which costs £169. If you are on a budget then you can get the older Apple TV for just £59. In either case, both of them will make a great Christmas gift.
Chromecast – This is Google’s foray into the media streaming world. Just like the Apple TV you can use this device to take video or audio and beam it to your TV. At £30 it will make an awesome gift. On top of that it also comes with £20 of free Google Play store credit that you can also give to the lucky recipient. Just like Apple TV, you can take the BBC iPlayer app on your smartphone and then send them(AKA cast them) to your TV. In fact, if you use Google Chrome as your web browser on your computer, then you can also cast any open Google Chrome tab to your TV. This can be really useful if you you want to show off some photos as Google’s Photos app will also work with Chromecast.
I know a lot of you out there might know someone who wants a decent smartphone, so here’s a few choices that I thought of.
WileyFox are a brand new company that has released some smartphones that are disruptive as far as the Android world goes. Both of their phones run the super popular CyanogenOS where you you can remove any or all of the pre-loaded software if you want. The WileyFox Storm(affiliate link) is a great phone with a 5.5″ display that is super clear. It’s got a slot that allows for two Micro SIM cards to be inserted so you can use it on 2 different phone networks (e.g. O2 and Vodafone).
On top of that it also has plenty of storage with 32GB on board and a memory card slot for a Micro SD card if you want to add more storage. As far as the software goes there is close to no bloatware at all. If there is anything that you don’t want on there then you can of course go ahead and uninstall it. As far as I know there’s no smartphone out there that gives you this kind of control.
It has a battery that will last you all day, a nice screen and pretty snappy performance to boot. I have used one of these and I was impressed by how well it handled phone calls.
At £199 you are looking at a phone with great value for money. If you are on a slightly tighter budget then you might want to check out the WileyFox Swift(affiliate link) which will set you back £129.
Motorola Moto G (affiliate link): One step down from their flagship phone(the Moto X), the Moto G is still a great phone with less bloatware than Samsung. Unlike some other flagship smartphones, this also has a MicroSD/memory card slot for storing your music on. It’s also got a good screen, good call quality and everything else you might want from your phone. Of course, it’s a close to pure android experience with close to no pre-loaded bloatware. The Moto G is priced at £139 for 8GB of storage or £169 for 16GB of storage. If storage is what you care about then I would recommend the 16GB version.
PC Gaming –
Over the Christmas/Holiday break I know that a lot of you might have some spare time on your hands and you might want to spend some of it doing some gaming.
XBox One Controller – £40(affiliate link): If you or someone that you are buying for is into PC gaming then this is an ideal gift. This is because most PCs and laptops now allow you to just plug in an XBox One controller via a wired USB connection. I have used one of these with different types of games including Trials Fusion (a bike platforming game), Need for Speed Shift, Ultra Street Fighter 4 and many others. Most laptops are compatible with the XBox one Controller.
So, you have your PC gaming accessory sorted, but what about the games? Well here’s a few suggestions.
Trials Fusion for PC (£15.99) – Traditionally, the trials series of games is about riding a bike from the start of a level to the end in the quickest time possible. However, you also have to keep the fewest mistakes you can. In this most recent iteration there are now some tracks where it’s about doing tricks to score as many points as possible within a time limit. I have played this one a lot very recently and I find this a lot of fun. With that said it’s a game that’s easy to pick up but harder to master.
Fallout 4 for PC(£44.99) – From Bethesda (the people behind Skyrim) comes my second pick for 2015. The world has been destroyed after a nuclear war but you are the only survivor in Vault 111. I won’t give away any other spoilers at the moment other than the fact that you will have a companion in the form of a dog called Dogmeat to join you on your adventure. With that being said you will also have to make some choices that will determine how the story plays out. I have not played much of this game myself but I have played enough to know that if you buy one game this year then make it Fallout 4.
In the case of both of the above games, we have
Well, that’s going to do it for my Christmas picks for 2015. I hope that you found it useful.
Which gifts are you buying? Let me know in the comments.
