Streaming sticks are already a big thing. Google already has their own Chromecast stick (which lets you send video from your phone to the TV). Amazon already has their Fire TV Stick for £40(affiliate link). However, Sky has decided to enter the fray with their Now TV Stick.
So, what does this one bring to the table? Well, Now TV lets you watch shows from your favourite Sky TV channels. You can also access on-demand TV from the BBC iPlayer, All 4 and Demand 5 apps as well. All of this is jam-packed into a stick that you can plug into the back of your TV.
The other trick that the Now TV stick will do is voice control. For example, if you press the voice control button and say “BBC iPlayer”, it will open up the BBC iPlayer app. Alternatively, if you say the name of an actor or a director, it will pull up a list of search results from Sky’s catalogue.
Additionally if you’re going to watch one of the Sky Sports channels or Sky Atlantic(for example) then you will also be able to hit pause whilst and then pick it up. This makes it perfect for when you need to take that phone call or answer the doorbell.
The Now TV streaming stick is going to set you back £14.99 and will come with a remote.
Additionally, full HD streaming will be coming to Now TV later on in 2018. I should also clarify that you can stream with Now TV in 720p HD.
It’s also good in a way because there are some TVs that don’t come with the BBC iPlayer (or other on-demand/catch-up TV services on them). As such this might be one way of getting that functionality on your TV. With that being said they are relying on you to buy the Now TV passes for Sky Sports, the cinema pass as well as the entertainment pass.
For me, there is already a big issue with this one: There’s already a Fire TV streaming stick ( that does the same thing. There’s also the Google Chromecast streaming stick. There’s also the Roku streaming stick. Were Sky too late to the game with the Now TV stick and full HD streaming for Now TV? Only time will tell.
There is also an issue of performance. How good will the loading times be for a streaming stick like the Now TV Stick? If you are going to buy one of them, you will want to be able to plug it into your TV, load up your favourite Sky TV shows onto and they should start streaming just like that without too much waiting.
Will you be picking up the Now TV stick? Let me know!
