11/5/2011 was the second day of Google’s Google IO conference, where google held a keynote speech. The announcements that I have listed here are in the order they were announced at the keynote speech.
So in my opinion, the major announcement of the day was that angry birds is available on the chrome web store right now. This meant that anybody with a Windows PC, Mac PC or Linux PC could now play angry birds for free right in their browser by going to chrome.angrybirds.com. So be sure to go and try it out and let me know what you think. In addition to this, google will only ask for 5% of revenue for apps sold in the chrome web store. Sure this is a direct shot at Apple who ask for 30% of revenue on apps sold in their app stores on their macs and iOS devices. I am sure this will cause developers who develop apps for both chrome
The second of the announcements was the chromebooks (the google chrome notebooks). The samsung and acer chromebooks would be available to you all on July 15th in the UK, and the USA as well as some countries. Of course, all these chromebooks will come with a jailbreaking mode built-in them. that means you can go into the software and mess around with the kernel and the rest of the OS code. The jailbreak mode will also allow you to install windows on it. Although you will have a hard time trying to find drivers for the 3G modem amongst the other stuff in there.
The third of the announcements was the offline mode of some chrome web apps. This means that you can essentially access some web apps without the need to be connected to the internet. That means you could be in places where you don’t have internet and play angry birds.
The fourth of the announcements was the support of WebGL being improved. For example check out the video below with the fish demo. It shows that there is better WebGL support.
Finally on a side note, if you want to play with chrome OS, then you can(and safely mind you). You can go to chromeos.hexxeh.net and get a VMWare image of Chromium OS (usable under virtualbox). The website also provide a USB image of Chromium OS. Provided your computer supports using a USB as a boot disk, then you can use chromium OS on your PC without affecting your hard drive(or on a virtual machine).
