We are a week away from the release of Windows 10. Some of you might be wondering how Microsoft is going to distribute Windows 10. Well, they have decided that they are going to sell it on a USB Flash Drive instead of the traditional DVD.
Incidentally, the US version of Amazon has put up a listing for Windows 10 home (aff. link) on a USB Flash Drive. The price of this full retail copy of Windows 10 on a USB Flash Drive: $119 (approximately £80) for Windows 10 home. If you want Windows 10 Pro (aff. link) on a USB Flash Drive then that will set you back $199 (approximately £128). Again, whilst Windows 10 is due to relase on the 29th of July it has been confirmed that this full retail copies will be coming on august 30th.
From a business perspective, selling these USB flash drives will be a challenge. As Windows 10 is going to be a free upgrade to those running a genuine copy of Windows 7 or 8 during the first year after it’s release, people will get Windows 10 free anyway. However, the license is actually going to be tied to your PC/tablet/smartphone instead of your account.
With that being said, the only way that Windows 10 is going to see any actual sales is if people pre-emptively buy one of these Windows 10 USB sticks in the event of their hard drive failing. Alternatively, gamers or enthusiasts who want to build their own PC will probably decide to buy Windows 10 on a USB flash drive.
The other interesting market is the mac users. When you get a mac, you have a technology on there called Boot Camp. This basically gives you the ability to install Windows on a second partition of your Mac’s hard drive/solid state drive (SSD). When powering up your iMac or Macbook you then get the ability to choose between the Mac operating system or Windows.
However, most manufacturers expect people to create their own recovery disks to re-install their copy of Windows. Whilst most tech savvy users tend to do this, the vast majority of the computer using public don’t seem to do this.
