For those of you that missed it, there has been a bit of uproar in the PC community over an interesting decision by Microsoft.
In a recent posting on a Microsoft Windows blog, Terry Myerson stated that PCs with a Skylake processor/CPU will not receive “critical updates” for Windows 7 or 8.1. Going forward, Windows 10 will be the only operating system that Microsoft will provide support for. To further rub salt into the wound, Microsoft will not provide support for future generation Intel CPUs on PCs running Windows 7 or 8.1.
What this means is, that unless you have a previous generation Intel processor in your PC on Windows 7 or 8.1 then you are fine.
So why would this be the case? Well the blog post indicates that some of the technologies behind the scenes would be too old to support these newer CPUs.
Last summer Intel released the Skylake processors which are their latest generation processors for desktop/laptop PCs.
Now, this is a very strange decision by Microsoft. This is going to cause quite an outrage in the Windows community. There are a lot of people who might have spent good money on a Skylake PC running Windows 7 or 8 so that they can play the latest games or some other purpose but won’t be able to do so. This is because Microsoft basically wants people with a Skylake processor to upgrade to Windows 10, but the thing is a lot of people might not want to upgrade. It’s also a lot harder to build a Skylake PC running Windows 7. I have looked around and I if someone does have stock available then they have only a few copies left of Windows 7. Your only real choice is Windows 10 or nothing.
From a business/enterprise perspective, a lot of companies are going to want to hang onto their Windows 7 PCs for as long as possible especially since Windows 8 and 8.1 were both a lot harder to use. Since Skylake processors will only support Windows 10 it will make them a bit scared to buy new PCs.
All-in-all my take on this is that Microsoft are basically punishing people with a Skylake processor in their Windows 7 machine for not upgrading to Windows 10.
What do you think? Is Microsoft punishing people with a Skylake processor unnecessarily? Let me know!
