For those of you that missed it, Samsung unveiled two new smartphones at their Unpacked event in New York, USA earlier this week. One of them is the Galaxy S6 Edge +.
In terms of specs, you are looking at:
- 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560×1440
- 4GB of RAM
- 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi
- 3.6GHz Octa-core processor
- 16 Megapixel f/1.9 rear facing camera
- 5 Megapixel f/1.9 front facing camera
- Android Lollipop 5.1
- 32/64GB of storage on board. Unfortunately there is no Micro SD card slot
- Samsung Pay (Samsung’s mobile payments solution – similar to Apple Pay and Android Pay)
So let’s talk about availability. The Galaxy S6 Edge + is going to be priced at £699.99 for the 32GB version here in the UK and you will be able to get it on O2, Three and EE. You will be able to pre-order it from 18th August and it will be in the shops from the 4th of September onwards.
On first impressions I have to say that having watched the launch event when it streamed live I have to say that I it does not look like much has changed. What they have done in terms of design is to take the Galaxy S6 edge and make the screen slightly larger. On a more personal level I am not really sold by the idea of using the curved edge as a notification area.
That being said the lack of Micro SD card slot is a deal breaker for me. I actually use the micro SD card to store all of my music, pictures and any videos which I have recorded using a phone’s camera. So if that is something that is a must then you might want to consider giving this a miss. Either that or be prepared to off-load your snaps and video onto your computer on a regular basis.
As far as Samsung Pay is concerned, it sounds good in theory. However, since Apple Pay is already there I am slightly concerned that Samsung are a little late to the mobile payments game. That being said we will just have to wait and see how many people will actually use it.
Will you be picking up a Galaxy S6 Edge + ? Let me know in the comments.
