Hello and welcome back to another edition of Adi’s Week in Tech News. For those of you who are new to this website, this is my roundup of the week’s tech news stories.
Apple has announced that they will be holding an event on the 12th of September 2017. It will be the first event to be held in the brand new Steve Jobs Theatre, which is part of Apple’s new headquarters in Cupertino, California USA.
Of course, there has been yet another big event that started this week. IFA is europe’s big consumer electronics show. LG showed off their newest offering, the V30 smartphone which touts a 6-inch full-body screen, which takes up the front of the phone. The key specs include a 6-inch display, 4GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage (with the option to expand that up to 2TB with a Micro SD card) and version 7.1.2(Nougat) of Android. Camera wise you are looking at a 16MP standard angle lens and a 13MP wide angle lens on the back and on the front you have a 5MP wide angle lens. It’s also going to have Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant.
It’s going to be releasing in South Korea first on the 21st of September 2017(a little less than 3 weeks from now). Other countries will come soon.
Lenovo has also been showing off some new stuff at IFA this year. They unveiled a new laptop called the Yoga 920. It allows you to send voice commands to the Cortana voice assistant whilst the laptop is on standby. The key specs include the 8th generation of Intel’s processors (up to the Intel Core i7 CPU), 13.9-inch screen, 8/12/16GB of RAM and 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of space with an SSD. It’s also get two USB type-C ports and a USB 3.0 port. The Yoga 920 will be released in September starting at €1599 in Europe(roughly £1467) and October in the USA starting from $1,329.99.
Motorola is bringing back the Moto X line of phones and the Moto X4 is their latest offering. It’s got a 5.2-inch 1080p(full HD screen), 12MP Dual Autofocus and 8MP wide angle lens on the back and a 16MP camera on the front which can do up to 4MP in low light. Internals include 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage(which can be boosted by up to 2TB with a microSD card). The Moto X4 will be released this month in Europe with a price tag of €399 (roughly o£366). Other countries (including the USA) will get it later this Autumn.
Augmented reality(AR) is a way of basically super-imposing imagery and graphics onto the real world using the camera in your phone. Google has also been getting into the AR space. One of the ways that they have been doing this is with a website they have put together called AR Experiments. This is a website which brings together “work by coders who are experimenting with augmented reality in exciting ways”. Some of the interesting experiments include Musical Fireworks (a display of fireworks that are superimposed into places where you point your camera) and Hidden World (an animated world that is super-imposed onto a surface that you point your phone’s camera at).
That’s all for this edition. Be sure to come back soon for yet another edition of Adi’s Week in Tech News.
