Welcome back to another edition of Adi’s Week in Tech News. If you’re new to this website, this is a weekly roundup of the week’s technology news stories. This includes some stories that you might have missed.
Let’s go ahead and start off with the main story of the week. It seems like Wi-Fi has been hacked yet again (just when we thought that it was quite secure anyway). The new hack has been callled Krack (Key Reinstallation AttaCK). When your computer or iPad connects to a router, it exchanges a some information to check if you have the right Wi-Fi passcode as part of whats known as the handshake. Once that’s done, a further set of keys are exchanged to ensure that any information sent between you and the router is encrypted, meaning that a bad guy cannot see that traffic.
What makes this a bad thing is that a bad guy can see what you are doing on the internet (and sometimes the usernames and passwords that you use). Worse still a bad guy can take the physical/hardware address(known as a MAC address) of the Wi-Fi router and become the Wi-Fi router. That means everything you do would go through the bad guy’s router, not your one. In turn, this means that they can redirect you to some malicious website and get you to install malicious software (for example).
Let’s take a look at some of the other news from the week.
Microsoft has started to roll out its latest update to Windows 10 known as the fall creators update. Here are some of the new features that you can look forward to:
- The ability to only download files from your OneDrive when you need them,
- Updates to the Microsoft Edge web browser (such as pinning websites to your taskbar),
- Pinning contacts to your taskbar (so you can right click on them, message them using Skype, send pictures using Skype and more right from the taskbar)
- The ability to monitor graphics card/GPU performance from within Task Manager
- Windows Mixed Reality (the ability to use some VR headsets with Windows 10 apps)
For most of you, the Windows 10 fall creators update will be downloaded in the background automatically when it’s ready for your PC/laptop/tablet. Otherwise, if you really cannot wait, then you can download your copy right now from the Microsoft Website.
Google photos is a cool way to backup your photos online and share them with people. Up until right now, it would only group photos together by different types of objects (e.g. planes, a rugby stadium, houses etc.) and people. However, in a new update to Google photos it will now group together photos of your pets. Of course, many of you give your pets a name, so you can search for “James” and it will bring up photos of your pet dog James if you like. If you are using the Google photos website on your chromebook/laptop/desktop PC then you are good to go already. Otherwise, you might need to update your Google Photos app.
Do you play games on the Nintendo Switch? Well, the 4.0 software update has been released this week which has added a few bits of functionality to your games console. For example, you can now do video capture directly on the Nintendo switch. This means that you can record gameplay videos. Video capture is only available for a few games (such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, ARMS, Mario Kart 8 deluxe and Splatoon 2). You will also be able to transfer game saves and user profiles to another Nintendo switch console, but the data from your old Nintendo switch will be deleted once everything has been transferred over to the new one.
This week there was also some news from TwitchCon(the annual conference for the Twitch community). One of the big stories to come out of the show was from Razer. They have come out with a new Webcam called the Seiren X and a new webcam called the Kiyo.
The Kiyo webcam can be propped onto your screen and is designed for those of you who broadcast on Twitch. It’s also compatible with the Open Broadcaster Software and XSplit. It’s capable of producing video at 720p HD at 60FPS all the way up to 1080p. The Kiyo Webcam is priced at $99 US/€109.99/£99 and is available from the Kiyo Page on Razer website.
The Seiren X is a condenser microphone. It connects to your computer via USB and has special pickup patterns which reduce unwanted noise. The Razer Seiren X is priced at £99.99 and is available right now through the Razer website. Both the Seiren X and the Kiyo will both be available through other retailers worldwide later in Q4 2017.
That’s going to do it for this edition. What were your favourite stories from the week? Let me know in the comments.
